Gay Icons

Who Are THE Gay Icons?

Gay icons are very important to the LGBTQ community. Many people feel they don’t have a voice and as a result it’s so important if the celebrity or celebrities support their choices that they could possibly represent them and stand beside them. It could be said they are advocates to the cause. A gay icon is embraced by the community and might have a few qualities; flamboyance, glamour, androgyny. They don’t have to be ‘part’ of the LGBTQ community, it’s their strength through adversity that gains them even more support. Over the years there have been plenty of gay icons in the entertainment industry but the following lists seems to be unanimous over a few polls but in no set order.

  1. Judy Garland
  2. Freddie Mercury
  3. Barbara Streisand
  4. Liza Minnelli (Judy Garland’s daughter)
  5. Elton John
  6. Joan Rivers
  7. Madonna
  8. Lady Gaga
  9. Ellen DeGeneres
  10. George Michael
  11. Cher
  12. Kylie Minogue
  13. Shirley Bassey
  14. Boy George
  15. Oscar Wilde
  16. Jodie Foster
  17. Elizabeth Taylor
  18. Marilyn Monroe
  19. Bette Midler

Freddie Mercury was one of the most important. As he was a rock star no one ever suspected he would reveal he was gay. On top of this he also revealed he had HIV, which was high in the 1960s, which he later died as a result. There are plenty more to list but this list of 20 gay icons have been or are known for their support of the LGBTQ community and supporting equality and same-sex marriage. Gay icons are emerging everyday through their efforts for the LGBTQ rights.
